AFB
Advanced Flooded Battery, FIAMM's name for its enhanced flooded design. It is built for start-stop engines without energy recovery and cycles more than a standard battery.
AGM
Sealed valve-regulated batteries with the acid held in glass mat, for cars whose start-stop system also recovers braking energy.
About FIAMM
The letters spell out the history: Fabbrica Italiana Accumulatori Motocarri Montecchio, set up in 1942 to build batteries for electric three-wheelers. Today FIAMM Energy Technology, still based in Italy, makes starter batteries. After years under Japanese ownership, first Hitachi Chemical and later Resonac, the company was bought by the investment group Aurelius in 2025. Is FIAMM AFB the same thing as EFB?
Yes, in practice. AFB stands for Advanced Flooded Battery and is FIAMM's name for the enhanced flooded type other makers call EFB. It replaces an EFB battery like for like in cars with basic start-stop.
Is FIAMM only suitable for Italian cars?
No. FIAMM batteries come in standard European DIN sizes, so they fit French and German cars that use the same case and terminals. We match by size, type and rating, not by the car's nationality.
Can you fit a FIAMM battery at my apartment building on Yas Island?
