Short answer
A proper battery test measures resting voltage, state of health under load, and the alternator’s charging output. A healthy rested 12 V battery reads about 12.6 V; a reading near 12.0 V means it is heavily discharged or worn.
A conductance tester estimates how much cranking ability the battery has left.
Alternator output is checked with the engine running and electrical loads on.
We look for corrosion, loose clamps, swelling and leaks.
