Start-stop on a Mazda
Recent Mazda models with start-stop need an EFB or AGM battery. We match the technology your car was built with, because a conventional battery will not last in a start-stop system.

Mazda's i-stop system changes what counts as the right battery. Models with i-stop use special JIS start-stop sizes, such as Q-85 on many CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6 versions, and a normal battery in its place will not last. After fitting, the system needs a short relearn procedure. Mazdas without i-stop use ordinary JIS batteries under the bonnet.

Many Mazda models with i-stop use JIS start-stop batteries with codes like Q-85 or S-95, which are EFB types.
After a battery change the i-stop system needs its stored charge data reset, otherwise the i-stop light may flash amber.
The CX-60 and CX-90 with mild hybrid engines combine a 48V system with a separate 12V battery.
A current sensor on the negative terminal measures charge on i-stop cars and has to stay in the circuit.
Choose your Mazda model for battery guidance specific to that car.

The technician explains the findings and carries out the jump start or replacement.
FAQ
Short, direct answers. Message us if yours is not here.
Q-85 is a JIS size code for an EFB battery made for start-stop cars, used on many Mazda models with i-stop. It has the same footprint as a regular D23 battery but is built for frequent restarts. We confirm the code on your battery label.
It usually means the i-stop relearn was not carried out after the new battery was connected. The system needs its charge history reset and a short initialisation. We do this as part of the replacement, so the light should be off when we leave.
It will start the car, but we do not recommend it. A standard battery is not designed for the repeated restarts and deeper cycling of i-stop, so it tends to fail early and the system may stay disabled. An EFB of the right size is the proper fit.
Send your location, car make, model and year, plus a short description of the problem. We check battery availability and confirm the next steps.
