Start-stop on a Volvo
Recent Volvo models with start-stop need an EFB or AGM battery. We match the technology your car was built with, because a conventional battery will not last in a start-stop system.

On a Volvo the 12V battery is watched constantly by a battery management system, so a replacement has to be the right technology and has to be registered to the car. Most models from the last decade use European DIN-size AGM batteries with start-stop. Depending on the model, the main battery is under the bonnet or under the boot floor.

Choose your Volvo model for battery guidance specific to that car.

Battery brands
These brands make the sizes and technology Volvo models commonly use.
Many start-stop Volvos, such as earlier XC60, S60 and V40 models, carry a small support battery alongside the main one.
On XC90 and S90 models built on the newer platform the main battery typically sits under the boot floor.
Mild hybrid models add a 48V battery, but the car still needs a healthy 12V battery for its electronics.
The EX30 and EX40 electric models use a 12V battery to wake the car before the high-voltage pack connects.

Start-Stop Battery ReplacementMany recent Volvo models monitor the battery through a sensor and expect a new battery to be registered. We confirm whether your model and year needs it and carry it out during the visit where the car allows.

FAQ
Short, direct answers. Message us if yours is not here.
Yes, on most Volvos from the last decade the new battery should be registered to the battery management system. Without it the car keeps charging as if the old battery were fitted, which can shorten the new one's life. We do this on site with a diagnostic tool.
It is a support battery that keeps the electronics steady while the engine restarts during start-stop. When it weakens, start-stop stops working and a warning appears, even if the main battery is healthy. We test both batteries separately and replace only the one that has failed.
On most XC90 models from 2016 onwards the main battery is under the boot floor, not under the bonnet. Charging points are provided in the engine bay. If the car is locked and flat, we power it from those points first, then replace the battery from the boot.
Send your location, car make, model and year, plus a short description of the problem. We check battery availability and confirm the next steps.
